Victorian Dinner

Victorian dinners must have been a blast! Our city archivist has recently discovered menus from Mayoral dinners which feature 16 separate toasts. During the 1800s, these lavish affairs were always held at the Swan Hotel.

As you can see from the image, the toasts started with ‘The Queen’ and ended with ‘The Ladies’ (who weren’t invited to attend such occasions). The wine which flowed was certainly not cheap and there were also 6 different Champagnes on offer. Dishes at these Mayoral feasts included Mock Turtle Soup, Turbot, and Blancmanges with Creams.

Our Victorian themed Gala Dinner is going to feature some dishes of the era as well as several toasts, but we will endeavour to keep the number to single figures!

Victorian Dinner – Sunday 4 February 2018

This one off fundraising event is being held in aid of Wells and Mendip Museum and Macmillan Cancer Support. Two fantastic local causes. It is sure to appeal to history lovers of all ages.

Thanks to involvement of Wells City Archives, guests will be able to view rare Victorian artefacts. These pieces will take the viewer on a journey through the ages of the hotel and explain the integral role it has played within the city for many years.

After the Victorian dinner there will be a talk and monologues read by local historians. Light entertainment will follow.

The ticket price is £30 per person and includes entrance to the exhibition, 3 course gala dinner and entertainment. Bed and Breakfast is available from £50 per person based on two sharing a standard twin or double bedroom. Women are very much invited to this event and Victorian dress is optional.

Places are bound to fill quickly. Please call 01749 836300 to book your tickets.

Our Victorian dinner is sure to highlight the importance of the Swan Hotel alongside the history of the council.
