mark at the helm

Mark Tobin, General Manager.

My name is Mark Tobin and I am privileged to hold the position of General Manager at the hotel. As General Manager, I am responsible for the smooth running of the entire hotel. From the moment that a guest arrives to the time that they leave, the buck stops here!

My association with the hotel stretches back over 27 years. As a fresh-faced 16 year old, I first visited the hotel as a bellboy. From that first rung of the hotel career ladder I progressed upwards. I held positions as night porter, barman, and conference and banqueting facilitator. Then, receptionist, chef, head housekeeper and head waiter! There wasn’t a job that I hadn’t tackled in this hotel before I became General Manager in 2013. It was a priceless education.

Mark Tobin in the community

I always wanted to work in hospitality. Rising to the position of General Manager in such an historic building is an honour. The hotel means an enormous amount to me and to many residents of Wells. It is my aim to ensure the hotel is at the heart of the community. I want to attract more UK and overseas guests to the area. Visitors always tend to leave with very positive memories.

Mark Tobin and Macmillan

Wells is a fairly close-knit community. I endeavour to support as many local charities as possible. One particularly close to my heart is, Macmillan Cancer Support. I am local chairman of this fantastic organisation. It is gratifying to see our regular fund raising lunches sell out so quickly. (I even posed naked for a fund raising calendar, but that’s another story!)

My quarter of a century at the hotel may seem like a long time. However, in a building which is over 600 years old, it is an incredibly short tenure. I appreciate that my custody of this fine ‘lady’ is only very temporary. I need to ensure that the building is in an even better condition and has an even better reputation than when I took over.

I hope that you will come and visit the hotel soon.
