Things to do in Wells

There are plenty of interesting things to do in Wells. England’s smallest cathedral city is home to some stunning architecture. Many of the buildings are of historical interest and there is a wide range of independent shops to explore. You really won’t be stuck for things to do in Wells.

Wells Cathedral is directly opposite the hotel. Constructed between the 12th and 14th centuries, it is one of the finest national examples of early English architecture.  The Cathedral is famous for its magnificent West Front which is directly opposite the hotel. It features around 300 statues and carvings. Inside the cathedral are stunning inverted scissor arches and one of the oldest working mechanical clocks in the world. A stroll to the Cathedral should be high up on any list of things to do in Wells.

The wells, which gave the city its name, are situated within the grounds of the Bishop’s Palace. The Palace features a 13th-century undercroft and peaceful gardens. The swans on the moat are trained to ring a bell for food!

More things to do in Wells

Vicars’ Close can lay claim to being the oldest, continuously inhabited, residential street in Europe. This street is located just off the Cathedral Green, directly opposite the hotel. The houses form an amazingly symmetrical pattern either side of the cobbled street.

Wells Market Place  has a twice weekly market held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. There are over 50 stalls offering an interesting array of goods. The market has been voted Best South West Farmers’ Market in the Taste of Somerset Awards and is well worth a visit.

Cedars Hall is a new, state-of-the-art performance centre just a short stroll from the hotel. The venue will be playing host to a number of concerts in the coming months.

Things to do in Wells – Local Events

Monday 27 August 2018
This popular annual event is held every August Bank Holiday Monday starting at 11.00 am. As in previous years there will be a flotilla of homemade rafts racing on the moat. In the adjacent park, stalls will provide something of interest for all ages. Musical entertainment will be on the bandstand with a brass band performing throughout the day. Weather permitting there will be a hot air balloon launch at 6.00 pm in the Palace Fields. Money raised from this event is split between the Bishops chosen charity, 1955 City of Wells Air Cadets & City of Wells Lions who raise money for local good causes.

Sunday 14 October 2018
From 10.30am to 4.30pm, Wells Food Festival will return once again to celebrate the best of Somerset’s wonderful local produce, with the area’s best artisan food and drink producers. The festival will have a mix of stalls in the Market Place, the Recreation Ground and along the Moat, as well as a Discovery Zone and Children’s Zone.
