Somerset Carnivals – The history

Somerset carnivals have long been a popular way to enjoy the evenings as the nights draw in. Brighten up autumn and winter with the bright lights and entertainment of the Somerset Carnivals!

Somerset Carnivals take place in different town centres across the county. They are a great family evening out.

Illuminated lorries (called ‘carts’ or ‘floats’) form part of an old tradition stretching back to the 1600s. At this time, numerous areas of the county commemorated the Gunpowder Plot. Firework displays and street entertainment add to the sense of fun.

Somerset Carnivals – 2018 Dates

Floats can be over 50 feet long and are decorated with hundreds of light bulbs. It’s certainly a labour of love. Carnival clubs often spend a whole year preparing for the grand event. Competition for a top 3 place can be fierce!

Some Somerset Carnivals are bigger than others as floats can be too large to navigate small streets! A list of the major Somerset Carnivals in 2018 can be found below:

Bridgwater on Saturday 3 November.
Burnham on Sea on Monday 5 November.
Weston Super Mare on Friday 9 November.
North Petherton on Saturday 10 November.
Shepton Mallet on Wednesday 14 November.
Wells on Friday 16 November.
Glastonbury on Saturday 17 November.
